Data from reality in the understanding of disability

Liliana Pantano

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to revise the characterization of disability in the light of our present reality, specifically focusing on educational aspects given the context of this publication and with the purpose of highlighting the wide range of opportunities for growth that education offers the individuals to develop their capacities within -and including- their limitations. All this is discussed with the objective of creating a space for reflection for every activity and instance of participation in life (vocation, work, affect, sexuality, citizenship, free time, the use of technology, etc.) in order to stimulate practices –good practices- which will, in turn generate more social conscience as regards the respect and valorization of the differences among human beings. With this aim, four different “cases” are narrated and analyzed. Such “cases” were identified and collected during experiences of “qualitative research” –that is to say, research that, in its broader sense, offers descriptive data (the real words spoken or written by the people and their observable behavior) and that – as with quantitative methodology- is a way of facing the empirical world more than a group of techniques to collect data-. We conclude with a number of considerations that refer specifically to the fact that disability is originated in a deficiency and is constructed in the interaction with the context; it is part of diversity and it is diverse in itself and it permeates everyday life. We finally, make reference to the importance of re-thinking our work on disability (as part of diversity) in life and “at school”

Key words: disability - qualitative research - good practices.
